Rawr. Making video games ain't eazy. This is a very buggy, sloppy, crappy version of some more progress on Joey Boy's Great Adventure for project 2.

Virtual Jihadi

I think that this game is pretty awesome. An example of re appropriation to some extent. Instead of recutting video footage to create new meaning it's reusing game code to create new meaning against it's parent. However the art doesn't really stand on it's own, at face value it seems to actually be a terrorist training video game. Without Quest For Sadam the piece loses it's value almost entirely, however I guess at this point context is just as important as the piece itself just ask Any Dadaist.
Of course once again the same right wing politics that will argue how guns are harmless, people kill people, like to argue the harm of the oh so threatening video games and art from those evil hippies who are trying to brain wash our public with games like Virtual Jihadi to promotes terrorism. Unlike their oh so harmless non-brainwashing propagandist attempts to shove our nations flag and the 10 commandments down our throats. Blind patriotism and blind support for a majority cause gets people in trouble.. just ask the terrorist extremists that.

I read on someone else's blog post about the Grand Theft Auto Hot Coffee incident, funny how a graphic steamy polygonal sex scene warrents the notion of banning a game, while America's Army or Duke Nukem that's full of misogony and rampant violence warrents less critisicm. Maybe if there were an American flag in the background of GTA it would be different story.

On a side note I can't tell whether Duke Nukem is a critique on blind patriotism, misogyny in video games, and unquestioned violence, or not. It's so over the top it could likely be.. again context I guess. Same goes for the Larry The Cable guy, is the real joke that he is actually an articulate intelligent scholar and he's actually fooling an enormous audience or is he really just that unfunny?

Progress

I'm thinking I'm going to do Joey Boy's Great Adventure For Fufilment, even though it would be more productive for me to work on Exaltica instead, but I'll probably be able to use a good amount of what I learn on Joey Boy's Great Adventure anyways, here's some .swfs for a progress update on the engine and the intro movie...

Intro Movie

After seeing the way the scrolling game works for what's presented in class it make me wonder if I went through all this work for a classic tile based engine when I could hav e done something much simpler like the engine we got where it just scrolls through certain layers to check collision detection. Where the map editor is basically inheritly in Flash. Ehh, too late for that now I already made my engine so here's my map editor, arrow keys left and right to scroll through the three test tiles I have, and click to place them.
